plays-with-squirrels:
what to wear when…a sea creature decides that it’s time to die. all her life, she’s been tossed by waves, tugged by currents, torn by fish hooks. but her death will not be like her life. this decision, though brutal, is hers, hers to own and hers to clasp tight. this choice is her treasure, her husband, and she cradles it as gently and gratefully as any wife ever has. she drags herself towards the land, spluttering in the shallows, fingers sinking into the sand up to the knuckle, determined to reach the beach, to die beneath a sky undistorted by shimmering water. she will not break her marriage vows to this choice, her choice. she heaves huge, lung-fluttering gasps as the scorching sun bakes her skin dry for the first time. dessicated and dead she may be but the choice was hers and she was his.

plays-with-squirrels:
what to wear when…populating bedtime stories judiciously pruned by protective parents of any fangs or fear or loss. in this clean and lawful dream, there are no sharks or trash; the sunlit sea is home to only shell-clad mermaids and obedient fish. colors are crisp, lessons are learned, and children are always, always lied to.

plays-with-squirrels:
what to wear when…ignoring those who say that animal print is classless, animal print is tacky, animal print isn’t what good girls wear. maybe it’s the implicit threat of a woman cloaked in a feral cat that could claw a man clear open, of the intimacy that follows slinking into someone’s skin. it’s classless to wear a hide heavy with memories of hot, wet blood. it’s classless for a woman to stretch and feel a surge of dangerous strength. it’s classless to yearn, to run, to snarl, to fight. cheetah print is shorthand for “test me,” leopard print is the visible confrontation of the structural commandment of “class.”
